Art, Science, Innovation, Technology and Society

The revolution that humanity is currently experiencing is due to a large extent to the significant advances in information and communication technologies. The massive changes that essentially characterise this new society are: the widespread use of technologies, communication networks, the rapid devolvement of science and technology and the globalisation of information. The expansion of these technologies based on microelectronics, informatics, robotics, and communication networks is being produced at great speed within all areas of human activity and at all socio-economic levels. At the same time, ICTs are defining an array not only of technological innovations but also of the tools needed to allow them to radically redefine how society functions.

Information Society and the Knowledge Society represent a profound change in society itself, but also within the art world and in the creative process which has radically different, characterised by its cross-cutting nature and hybridisation through the formation of multidisciplinary, transnational groups. It must be understood as individually focussed, integrated, and aimed at the development in which everyone can create, consult, utilise and share information and knowledge. In order for people, communities and populations to be able to fully explore their possibilities in the promotion of sustainable development and improvements in the quality of life, We can only talk of a true Knowledge Society once the creation, distribution and manipulation of information forms an important part of cultural and economic activity.

Technology tends to be ubiquitous and non-intrusive. The great changes that are about to happen can already be seen. We are constructing a society through whose veins runs the internet. Intelligent communication systems will allow us to access accurate information from our homes, from our cars, as we walk. These changes carry with them a number of cultural questions and challenges. In order to attempt to gain an insight into the direction we are taking in art and society as a whole, a future that is already with us, we need to debate and reflect, from various viewpoints, its occurrence in our multi-faceted reality. Only in this way will we be able to feel that we have a role in these global changes, designing and directing the process and not just as mere receptors of its content. It is necessary to promote a society that is well informed, able to exercise critical control and to benefit from its uses and the expectations we have of what new technologies have to offer.

The development of networks in all social fields makes greater and better mutual knowledge possible, coordinating and optimising resources and exchanging global experiences. Nevertheless, despite these possibilities, there is a long way to go before these potentialities can be seen to be fully developed. We continue to witness the dispersion and lack of coordination of resources both in terms of infrastructures and in technical and human resources. Numerous groups exist that are working in the fields of art, research and development, with little connection between them. This situation prevents the implementation of protocols for systematic research that might have an impact on art and bring society closer together. On the other hand, effective coordination will make it possible to use ICT in relationships between administrations and users and for the realisation of artistic projects with international reach.

The challenge for individuals that develop in all areas of knowledge is to live in accordance with the demands of this new type of society, to be informed and up to date, to innovate, but above all, to generate proposals, to generate knowledge. Information and Communication Technologies, especially the internet, represent a new environment that will strengthen the possibility of converting marginal areas into questions of general interest. Phenomena will be developed by people, not just from the media and institutions. Currently, information is proactive: a part of each one of us. It is the individual who decides what is important.

To act in line with how we want the world to be holds its own intrinsic value. We never need to become desperate with the magnitude of the problems that globalisation has brought. We should never be made to feel small by living in such a large world. We should never forget or minimise the infinite importance of people. Within this global entity, Spain can present an essential point of reference for a better understanding between nations, civilisations living peaceably side by side. It is absolutely necessary to establish networks that will make communication and collaboration possible between institutions and people in a fluid, attainable and permanent way.
