Proyecto: Hive
“Hive” takes a look at the unplanned urbanization, which has been paraded under the guise of “urban renewal”, Istanbul has been undergoing for many years. This unplanned urbanization creates mega cities made out of concrete, by destroying the existing historical and cultural legacy. This situation is conveyed through the visualization of Marx’s bee and machine metaphor. This metaphor exemplifies how, due to the heavy work load, the workers become mechanical; how they are not only exposed to the adverse effects of this workload but even pay for it with their lives. They are forced to work at such a speed and yet this speed leads to the creation of both abundance, but also nothingness. At the same time, the metaphor represents the impossibility for the workers to own the very building they help produce. In this sense, “Hive”, focuses on the workers’ working conditions, contract labor, human rights and urban renewal.

In Greek mythology, during the chaotic times of the first godly beings before the cosmos was formed, Gyes was one of the three sons of Gaia and Uranus who had one hundred arms and fifty heads. The first of this video art trilogy which represents the three giant names of mythology - Gyes (terror) Kottos (anger), Brianos (strength) – is Gyes; present in the world on a major scale, and represented in Turkey, especially in Istanbul as an image through the horrific point urban transformation, changing living spheres and unjust living conditions have reached.
Today, Istanbul has become a giant construction site where the terrifying reflections of the applied urban politics can be seen through the disappearance of ethnic identities, and the gap in the living conditions of individuals. These terrifying images of the new living spaces are part of the utopic world aimed to be created through the process of modernization, turning into the fantastic dystopic hero Gyes, which has the scary potential to take over the world in the future.
This video has an experimental language, leaving the traditional horizontal video format behind for a vertical design. The framing and point of view aim to create an illusion. Reality is broken in this new form created through documentary footage, where micro human figures move at a rapid pace, reflecting the speed of the world in which we live in and creating a façade of time.

Formed in January 2009, the Medeology Collective is a group of artists whose artwork is concerned with the cultural, political and technological influence of the mass media in the form of new media digital video performance in public, academic and gallery contexts. The group crosses the boundaries between video art, installation art, sculpture and VJing practices and focuses on media mythos, media magic, media ideology and mediations of representation. Core members include Jim Gladman, Kelley McClung and Alessandro Imperato.
The Medeology Collective proposes to create a live video projection work that involves the use of a large projection mapped surface to combine their video feed into an integrated collage based on the theme of borders and territorial migration.
From Brexit in Europe to hysteria in the USA over Mexican borders, the issue of migration and trans-migratory populations across Europe and the world relates to this era of fortress policies on immigration, border controls and fears of foreign ‘contamination’ from the national Other. We propose to use the collaged and fragmentary space of inter-laced video feeds as a metaphor of the crossing of borders. Three video performers would cross visual boundaries and integrate these fields with projection mapped imagery on a large surface, subject to discussion.
European borders, market protectionism, and cultural migration will be foregrounded in the content of the video and the context of the Canary Islands.
The Medeology Collective is a USA based art group and therefore we are very aware of our status of being immigrants in the European context. The history of the USA as melting pot relates to the European experience of newer countries joining the cultural mix and reactions to the growing territories of the EU.
This crossing between the privileged zones and the cultural dialectic of the inside and outside of fortress Europe plays with the idea of cultural protectionism and cross-pollination. Borders, whether spatial or temporal become the quixotic themes which we would investigate in the performance.
Earlier in our formation the work ‘Reflexion Pool’ in 2011, was a live performance audio-visual work directly inspired by the improvisational approach of the Free Jazz movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s, that utilizes the aesthetics of electronic sound art and live video performance.

This film is an internal journey that poses the same metaphysical questions we have been questioning for centuries: as material beings we also wonder about this world that is not palpable and we can't totally understand but that we can feel and it's important for us as it makes us human. The monastery where she strolls creates this peaceful and silent atmosphere and the beautiful architecture evokes this border between the real and the imaginary world. Each person endures his/her own path to this initiatory experience that may be religious or philosophical but it certainly will take him to a different place from that where he/she is now. The video is also a metaphor of the technological era: the physical world and the virtual world are part of our humanity more and more and technology is also an inner path to understand ourselves better in a near future.

Shizen is the Japanese word for nature and the video reflects our relationship to nature by transposing the Makimono - the traditional Japanese horizontal hand scroll - into a contemporary manner. Throughout the year seasonal motifs are changed - accordingly spring, summer, autumn and winter progress as well as the destruction of our environment.
A global question and challenge arise for mankind: to coexist in harmony or to control, master and exploit nature?
The ambient ‘video scroll’ presents a poem of the famous Japanese poet Yamabe no Akahito as a reflection on the conflicting relationship struggling between tradition and technological and cultural progress.
The traditional concept of multi-perspective and the endless hand scroll are explored through digital filmmaking, video compositing and virtual camera, depths and particle systems and mixed with life recorded video footage.
