PlantBot Genetics aka Wendy DesChene + Jeff Schmuki Auburn. USA Project: Dueling Attackaratus What is PlantBot Genetics? PlantBot Genetics is a parody biotech corporation that satirically looks at the possible evolution of plant species due to the consequences of modern agricultural practices. Genetically modified food technology is so new that we have no idea what long term effects it will have on those who consume it, the lands on which it is grown, what wide-ranging environmental impact may occur. Monsantra, our company's most widely distributed PlantBot product, is named after the Monsanto Corporation, one of the largest suppliers and producers of genetically modified seed. Like a B-movie Godzilla, PlantBots are a hybrid of imagination, possibility, and reality. We can only guess what will happen to the food supply with subsequent generations of GMO's? Using actual seeds created and patented by the Monsanto Corporation and other suppliers, plants are grafted onto robotic and remote controlled bases to become an organism with no clear heritage and no clear future. The poetic GMO plant robot hybrid hybrids beg the question, what will it all become? Like any other successful biotech, we have expanded our market share to include other projects that look to a larger environment impact. Our most recent Moth Project represents a more direct approach to this form of public practice and scholarship. Dueling Attackartus These PlantBots are so fierce and hardy that when PlantBot Geneticists find one, they immediately (at great risks to themselves) try to contain it in a sealed container for study. Attackaratus is a SuperBug specimen resistant to the inserted Bacillus thuringiensis or Bt gene in modified crops designed to kill insects. It is inevitable that resistance builds with each insect generation and our first-rate team of etymologists is hopeful the Attackaratus will be contained. Thus far, current pesticides cannot destroy increasing populations of these bugs. These PlantBots are extremely aggressive towards each other and when placed side by side become extremely agitated. tag: videoart |
