These works are drawn from a series that started in early 2011 entitled “Karmics: Free Admission on Tuesdays”. The idea for the series was based on conversations or inner monologue punctuating heady and poignant moments of self-disclosure of anonymous faceless figures. The narratives and relationship portrayed in the panels are multifaceted and words are of course a major component of that complexity. However there are a couple other threads of content streaming through the works including social commentary, a celebration of the intelligence and struggle audiences contend with the concerning the challenges, ambiguities, and exploitations of contemporary art.

"The Factory" [42764203], un proyecto que hace referencia al video arte y al cine experimental, corrientes que tienen sus orígenes en los años 60.

En un único plano secuencia, un giro de 360º, se muestra un espacio dispuesto de forma similar a la Silver Factory de Nueva York, fundada en 1963, hace ahora 50 años, donde Andy Warhol comenzó a hacer sus primeras películas en las que mostraba hechos de la vida cotidiana [dormir, comer, cortar el pelo, beber].

Does it exist, the monster under the bed, the bogeyman in the closet,
the "Wolpertinger" in the Bavarian mountains, the dragon from midieval times, the Harpy from Greek mythology or Grandma's ghost who howls in the basement? And what do old statues do during the foggy night?

Animated mythical creatures float through the park. Static drawings turn into animation into drawing.
Strange nightly landscapes make space for ghosts. Statues become alive ...

A film, which deals with the inbetween space between mysticism and phantasy, a little bit creepy, a little funny. And somehow a little bit like the drooling monster under the bed which kept us awake as a child ...

The “Detection” project consists in registering the emission of heat produced by the humans bodies and by the architecture. Thermovision technology permits detection and imaging of changes in heat radiation emitted by physical bodies.
Through precise scanning of changes in body temperature we can effectively register physiological correlates accompanying emotional states which might result from religious elation, illness, nervousness, fear or sexual arousal.
“Detection” reflects the issue of potential infiltration of further levels of our private lives. HD-Video presenting communication centres – architecture and moving silhouettes of people.

The displayed material would be registered by mean of the thermovision technology described above, which permits for detecting and imaging changes in heat radiation. Thanks to its properties, the thermovision camera used during project implementation would permit exact registration of the heat emitted by objects within the frame. This would result in detection of the actual anomalies that make an individual or a group of people act at a given moment in a manner that is different than usual or different from others’ behaviour.

The soundtrack was composed by Hubert Napiórski, on the basis of recordings made at the locations where video material was registered and on “Solfeggio frequencies” used so as to provide subliminal stimulation of the audience.....

The video is based on a series of photographs of birch bark, which have been manipulated with digital effects and compression artefacts. It mimics an imagined, speeded up process where the surface of the tree is evolving and cracking up, in a world that exists between the real and the digital.

"The Green and the Blue" profiles Marilyn Figueroa's relationships with her plants and her pacemaker. One is built from a lifelong love of the greenery from her birthplace in Puerto Rico; the other is an imposed necessity, regulating her heart's rhythm to keep her alive. Both enter and alter her experience of the world, changing who she is through their interactions. The film explores borders and border-crossing as we simultaneously differentiate ourselves and are assimilated by our environment.

I wondered 'what is film? What is video?' Maybe it could be a just moving picture. Or record of something.
And I wanted to make ineffective video when I filmed about it. So, I filmed a stuffed bird. Unmoving It is ineffective video.
I asked to myself, ‘why everything must be effective?’
Art doesn't have to be effective or useful for the ultimate. That's one of my favorite part of the Art. But even though, I hope this video is meaningful in this society which is full of making benefit in every field.

The video aspect of the piece, through layered and often opposing imagery representative of the artist's experiences in the year 1999, is intended to provoke a gestalten experience from the viewer. The video component exploits the artifacts that are inherent to the video medium as a conscious deconstruction of the medium itself. Various techniques, including varying of frame rates and aspect ratios, rescanning, and large-scale feedback loops achieved through satellite manipulation, contribute to the deconstruction process. The video is layered with different encoding versions (NTSC, PAL, and SEACAM) which results in a single unified piece that is uniquely experienced dependent on the locale where it is viewed.

The musical component of this work centers around an ascending melodic fragment which is presented through distressed piano recordings. Viola da gamba, voice, and environmental recordings along with sounds found in the composer's archive that date from the year 1999 are collaged together to form a tapestry upon which various transformations of the piano fragment are set upon. This juxtaposition, of the tapestry and the piano line which tirelessly struggles in its ascension, acts as a metaphor for the continued hope and promise which lies beyond 1999.

An important aspect of the collaboration between Russell J. Chartier and Paul J. Botelho is the principle of synchronicity. The video artist and the composer never work directly with one another’s work during the collaboration. Only the specific duration of the piece is agreed upon and no other communication in regard to the work is made during the collaboration. Solely upon the completion of both the video and music components is the work realized. The artists call this process a collective subconscious, a term which refers not only to the exclusionary creative actions which take place in their collaborative effort, but more broadly as the commonality that permeates betwixt the artists and those close to them.

Guardianas de la memoria son los testimonios de las mujeres o hijas de los emigrantes, de los que tuvieron que irse a intentar buscar una vida mejor, aquellas que se quedaron guardando la casa y la memoria del que se fue y las que administraron los recursos que venían de fuera. Se ha hablado mucho de la emigración, del papel y los esfuerzos de los que se fueron, pero no se ha hablado tanto de las que se quedaron, las que mantuvieron la familia y la ilusión. La memoria es un elemento indispensable, tanto en nuestras vidas como en las de las ciudades y sociedades en las que habitamos. Ella no sólo es parte de nuestro pasado, es la realidad de nuestro presente y con ella –o sobre ella- debemos construir nuestro futuro. Está encerrada en nuestras tradiciones y costumbres, pero también entre las paredes de nuestras casas, en las habitaciones, en los patios. A veces se deja entrever por las ventanas y, muchas veces, la vemos viva en un comentario de la gente por la calle, en el mercado, en las plazas. Las mujeres conservan esta memoria por varias razones. Una posible porque ellas están más atentas al discurrir de los asuntos cotidianos, eso es importante. No olvidemos que la historia no se hace con grandes gestos y ni la hacen las personas “importantes”; la historia la hacemos todos y todas, pero especialmente está tejida de asuntos “sin importancia”, de cosas del día a día. Esa memoria está aquí, la de adentro, la de la esposa que vio a su marido partir, la que cría, cuida y alimenta a los hijos, la que se siente orgullosa cuando éstos salen adelante. Andalucía es una tierra de migraciones, tanto de los que vienen como de los que se van, pero en los años sesenta y setenta del siglo XX fueron importantes por la cantidad de andaluces y andaluzas que tuvieron que dejar pueblos y familias. Los que se marcharon fueron especialmente los hombres, mientras que muchas mujeres se quedaron guardando la casa y construyendo la familia. Una video instalacion que analiza el cerebro de la maquina que produce video, la camara, y su manera de procesar, de segmentar la secuencia temporal, pudiendo dilatar elasticamente el tiempo en el montaje. Two cameras capture two separate portraits simultaneously, [one still,one video] as the light from the passing train illuminates the subject. As the raised Ubahn train takes 8 seconds to pass, so long does the still camera opens it's shutter, and video camera captures the kinetic energy of the of the sitter at night.
